12 More Southern Conifers—The Araucarians

Three genera in the Araucariaceae family are living today—Agathis, Araucaria, and Wollemia. This is strictly a southern conifer family, with fossil ancestors dating back at least 250 million years. Australia’s three Agathis and three Araucaria species are found nowhere else in the world. Relatives can be found in other Southern Hemisphere locations such as New Guinea, Melanesia, New Zealand, and South America. Sometime over the last 200 million years, the Araucarian conifers gradually retreated from Northern to Southern Hemispheres, and eventually into refuge areas in the south, as the flowering plants emerged to dominate world floras during the Cretaceous.
