Bluff Knoll is a magnificent peak to climb, and at 1,095 m it is the highest in the range, with great views to the sea. It is also notorious for misting over and sometimes trapping unwary climbers. When we first climbed it in the early 1990s we found on the summit a “bonsai garden” of many wildflowers, including this beautiful “coneflower”, which was flowering profusely in a rock crevice just below the top. We had a magnificent view of the mountains and valleys to the sea, but observed that mists were rolling in, and beat a hasty retreat. Isopogons belong to the Proteaceae family, which is featured in Section 22 “The Fire-Embracing Proteas of Oz”.
