from the artist
Firewheel Banksia was inspired by a top-down vertical perspective which revealed curved wheel-like “spokes” formed by rows of partly opened flowers, which appeared to spiral around the central core of the flower head. Scarlet banksia (Banksia coccinea) is a species which varies greatly in leaf size and flower colour, which can vary from bright red to orange.
This painting was selected as a finalist for the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize 2005.
