This is one of two artworks featuring the “coral gum” (Eucalyptus torquata), a eucalypt found exclusively in the greater Coolgardie area. The location is Gnarlbine Rock, a granite oasis near Coolgardie with gnamma holes and permanent water. The curved, corrugated operculum caps of the gumnuts pop off to reveal multiple pink to red stamens.
In later years we discovered many coral gums growing healthily in Adelaide, along bikeways and in gardens. Apparently they have also been cultivated in California and Arizona, USA (Chippendale, 1988, pp. 298–299). Like many eucalypts, they are very adaptable!
